¡we love the straw… the reusable one!

There are days for all tastes. Rare days and curious days, like February 11. Do you know why? Because that day is celebrated, neither more nor less, than the World Day of drinking with straw. As you already know, we are lovers of reusable straws and super haters of plastic straw.

But, do you know who were the first to use them? Sumerians and Babylonians. And you know why? Not to swallow the beer grounds. But the most curious thing of all is that they were made of precious materials and had the same shape as the butterfly trunk, essential to suck pollen from flowers.

But the years passed and the wonderful invention that is the straw also evolved. There were several pioneers, all curious and eager to solve some other problem related to drinking. It was not until 1870 that a gentleman named Eugen Chapin patented the first straw. He made it for sanitary purposes, saying it was “a drinking tube for invalids”.

Then came updates and new versions, such as that of Marvin Stone, a cigarette mouthpiece manufacturer who invented a straw made of Manila paper to avoid drinking the hay stalks of his cocktails. Then he made it waterproof by adding a paraffin film.

Finally, we cannot forget Joseph Bernard Friedman, another inventor who decided to help his young daughter drink with a straw. What he did was to incorporate a flexible crease, turning the straw into a much more comfortable and ergonomic element. Such was his success that the health sector reclaimed it again. Thanks to this slight inclination, patients lying in bed could drink even while lying down.

Yes, the straw is a very cool invention. It has made drinking easier for children, adults and patients throughout history. But unfortunately all good things come to an end. Straws were wonderful accessories made of paper or cardboard, but the years 50-60 came and everything changed. Plastic, plastic and more plastic. A lot of disposable items made of plastic, like straws, invaded the lives of people around the world.

Well, that’s when this harmless product began to invade our planet, generating millions and millions of plastic waste totally harmful to our environment. Such is the scale of the problem that the European Parliament itself has banned single-use plastics such as cutlery, dishes, cotton buds or straws. If all goes well, during 2021 these products will disappear from our supermarkets.

So do not deprive yourself and get the benefits and glamour of drinking with straw. Of course, always reusable, as our super set of 2 straws stainless steel. An ideal alternative to leave behind the plastic straws, which we use just for 5 minutes to then be five centuries on Earth.
